The energy shortage
THE U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission announced that it has opened an investigation into whether futures traders conspired to drive up oil prices. We doubt the investigation is necessary; when one considers breakneck economic development in India and China, the weak U.S. dollar, and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting...
EIA: Weak Economy, High Oil Prices to Slow Energy Demand Growth

ENERGY 2008: HIGHER PRICES AND VOLATILITY
While the $100 print in crude oil futures at the beginning of the year was apparently the result of a glory seeking pit trader and not legitimate price discovery, there is no magic to that number and oil will most likely breeze past it in 2008. But it won't be...
What $100 Barrels Have Meant
Oil has broken the $100/barrel mark for the first time, and as our own Jessica Stillman reports, its driving up the price of gum. But exactly how much are the stratospheric oil spots truly affecting the bread-and-butter (or more appropriately, the milk and eggs)? Washington Post pins the YOY price...
Oil prices drop amid US economy fears
LONDON AFP — Oil prices fell as the market tracked fresh concerns about the US economy, with fears that a slowdown in the United States could dampen demand for crude, traders said Monday. Prices had risen earlier Monday as a major snowstorm struck the United States over the weekend,...
OPEC adding holdings to U.S. debt by 12%
The biggest quarterly rally for U.S. government securities in five years is getting an extraordinary boost from the burgeoning reinvestment of petrodollars by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. OPEC members increased their holdings of Treasuries 12 percent this year through July to $123.8 billion, Treasury Department data...

The Persian Gulf, global oil resources, and international security
I. INTRODUCTION Remaining global conventional crude oil resources are on the order of 3 trillion barrels, with more than 50% of that amount in the Persian Gulf. Consequently, Persian Gulf oil has been of considerable interest to Western oil companies and governments and to Russia for more than a...

Let's all (third) party
WHAT would OPEC do if it wanted to keep America addicted to oil? That's easy. OPEC would urge the U.S. Congress to deal with the current spike in gasoline prices either by adopting the Republican proposal to give American drivers $100 each, so they could continue driving gas-guzzling cars and...
