Dr. Volberding is widely considered one of the world's leading AIDS experts. He cofounded one of the first AIDS-designated clinics in the early 1980s at San Francisco General Hospital. This clinic has evolved into the top-rated medical care facility for AIDS in the country. Dr. Volberding has served on numerous key national committees over the course of the epidemic, including the National Academy of Sciences (Institute of Medicine) AIDS Policy Review Steering Committee, National Institutes of Health (NIH) AIDS Drug Selection Committee, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases AIDS Clinical Trials Group Executive Committee, Institute of Medicine Round Table, and the AIDS Clinical Trials Group Executive Committee. In 1990, Dr. Volberding cochaired the Sixth International Conference on AIDS, held in San Francisco, and served on the international advisory committees for all subsequent international conferences. He is currently chief of the medical service at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and principal investigator and codirector of UCSF's Center for AIDS Research. Dr. Volberding has written numerous research and review articles. He is the coeditor-in-chief of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, and is the founder and chair of the board of the International AIDS Society-USA. He is also the coeditor of The Medical Management of AIDS, the most widely used textbook of HIV medicine, now in its sixth edition. In 1999, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
James B. Glavin has 38 years of experience in the health care pharmaceutical industry. He has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of Immune Response since May 1993, CEO from April 1987 to September 1994, President from October 1987 to September 1994, and Treasurer from April 1987 to May 1991. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Smith Laboratories, Inc., a medical products company, from September 1985 to May 1990 and Acting President and CEO from September 1985 to August 1989. During 1985 to 1987 Mr. Glavin was a Partner in CH Ventures. From 1981 to 1983, he was President and CEO of Genetics Systems Corporation and Chairman of the Board from 1983 to 1985. In addition to being Director and Chairman of Immune Response, he is currently a Director of Nektar Therapeutic Systems, Inc., formerly Inhale Therapeutic Systems, Inc., Meridian Fund, and Chairman of the Board of Avanir Pharmaceuticals.
Dr. Perelman has served as a member of Immusol's Board of Directors since 1996. Dr. Perelman began his career in 1957 as an organic chemist and held a number of positions at Eli Lilly & Co. (Lilly), including serving as President of Lilly International. From 1986 until his retirement in 1993, Dr. Perelman served as Executive Vice President of Lilly and President of Lilly Research Laboratories. He was a member of the Lilly Board of Directors and its Executive Committee from 1976 to 1993. Dr. Perelman received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Rice University. Currently, Dr. Perelman is a Director at Immune Response Corporation, a biotech company and Inhale Therapeutics Systems, Inc., a drug delivery system company.
