Oshkosh Door Company?s roots reach back to the beginning of the city of Oshkosh itself. The city was founded in 1853, the same year that lumberman Charles Paine arrived from New York and established the C. N. Paine Company. Paine Lumber was a pioneer of advancements in the door industry. By 1898 Paine?s annual production had reached 400,000 doors and the company demonstrated its foresight by testing the feasibility of using Birch and Oak in lieu of Pine. Before the end of the century, Paine was offering doors with Oak and Birch veneered faces. Due greatly to Paine?s technological advancements, it grew rapidly. In 1927, Paine Lumber Company was the largest plant of it?s kind in the world and claimed to be making 20,000 doors per day! As the Architectural and Residential markets changed over the years, Paine was quick to change with the demands. It offered wood block (stave) cores, particleboard cores, fire rated mineral cores, lead lined x-ray doors, and was a leader in the development of the factory machining and finishing that still exits today. The 7-ply edge-framed (drop-in) method utilizes a 1/8" plywood face panel, glued over a dropped-in core. The edge framing offered a lower cost solid core construction required by the market demands of the time. The 5-ply method incorporated a thinner 1/10" 2-ply skin, but it was glued over an abrasively planed edge-bonded core with matching vertical edges, resulting in a smooth aesthetically pleasing surface. ...
