Alan G. Walton, Ph.D., D.Sc. is a co-founder of Avalon and has served as a member and Chairman of our board of directors since Avalon s inception in November 1999. Since 1987, Dr. Walton has been a general partner of Oxford Bioscience Partners, a venture capital firm investing in life sciences enterprises. Prior to joining Oxford Bioscience Partners, Dr. Walton was President and Chief Executive Officer of University Genetics Co. Dr. Walton serves on the board of directors of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc., Acadia Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Advanced Cell Technologies, Inc. He previously has served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors or as a Director for numerous private and public biotechnology companies, including Human Genome Sciences and Gene Logic Inc. He was a professor at Case Western Reserve University and Harvard Medical College from 1961 to 1981 and a member of President Carter s Technology Transfer Committee from 1976 to 1977. Dr. Walton holds a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, a D.Sc. in Biological Chemistry and a B.S. in Chemistry, each from the University of Nottingham and in 2005 received a honorary LLD degree in recognition of his lifetime achievement in life sciences, also from the University of Nottingham.
David K. Bol, Ph.D. has served as Vice President of Pharmaceutical Development since April 2005. Dr. Bol joined Avalon in September 2002 as a Senior Scientific Director. Prior to joining Avalon, Dr. Bol worked at Bristol-Myers Squibb since 1996 and was Group Leader and Principal Scientist at Bristol-Myers Squibb since 2001. Prior to Bristol-Myers Squibb, Dr. Bol was a Faculty Research Associate in the Department of Carcinogenesis at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. Bol holds a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from University of Maryland and a B.S. from The University of Rochester, New York. Alan G. Jonathan J. Fleming is one of our co-founders and is Chairman of our Board of Directors. Mr. Fleming served as Chairman from January 1998 to May 2005 and assumed the position again in October 2006. Mr. Fleming has served as the Managing Partner of Oxford Bioscience Partners, a venture capital firm specializing in life science technology since 1996. Prior to joining Oxford Bioscience, he served as a Founding Partner of MVP Ventures in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. Fleming serves as a member of the board of directors of Imcor Pharmaceutical Co. (formerly Photogen Technologies, Inc.), a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on developing medical imaging pharmaceutical products. He also serves as Chairman of the board of directors of BioProcessors Corporation, a privately-held corporation, and as a director of seven other privately-held companies, including Leerink Swann & Company, Inc., a Boston-based investment bank specializing in health care companies. Mr. Fleming is a Trustee of the Museum of Science in Boston and is a Senior Lecturer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management. Mr. Fleming received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and a Masters in Public Administration from Princeton University.

Dr. David Armistead joined Oxford Bioscience Partners as an Executive in Residence in 2004. Prior to joining Oxford, he was Vice President and Site Head for the Amgen Cambridge Research Center where he oversaw all aspects of the East Coast research activities for Amgen Inc. In 1997, Dr. Armistead was a co-founder of Kinetix Pharmaceuticals where he held the position of Vice President of Research and Development and Chief Scientific Officer until the acquisition of Kinetix by Amgen in December 2000. His research at Kinetix and Amgen focused on the rational design of selective inhibitors of protein kinases in the fields on inflammation and oncology. Previously, he held the position of Head of Immunosuppressive Research and Development and Senior Scientist-Medicinal Chemistry at Vertex Pharmaceuticals where he focused on the use of structure based drug design for the identification and development of novel therapeutic agents in the areas of immune suppression, cancer, inflammation, neuroprotection and nerve regeneration. Prior to that, Dr. Armistead held the position of Senior Research Chemist in Inflammation and Immunology at Merck Sharp and Dohme Research Laboratories (Merck and Co., Inc.). He left Merck to become a founding member of Vertex in 1989. Dr. Armistead has over 18 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. To date, this work has lead to the identification of a number of drug candidates which are currently in human clinical trials in the fields of autoimmune disease, oncology and virology. Dr. Armistead holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science in Chemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, a Ph.D. in Synthetic Chemistry from the University of South Carolina and was a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University.

Dr. Poorvin has over 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Most recently, Dr. Poorvin retired from Schering-Plough Corporation as Vice President of their Business Development operations where he negotiated licenses, joint ventures and acquisitions of pharmaceutical products and research technologies. At the time of Poorvin's retirement, 70% of Schering-Plough's pharmaceutical sales were derived from third party products acquired during his tenure. Prior to spending 14 years in Business Development, Dr. Poorvin held positions of Director of Clinical Research at Schering-Plough and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. He was responsible for several NDA programs and product approvals at both companies, including such drugs as Procardia and Imdur. Poorvin started his career in the pharmaceutical industry at Lederle Laboratories, were he directed pre-clinical research in the cardiovascular area. Dr. Poorvin received his B.A. degree from Hunter College of the City University of New York. He received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University where he subsequently was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship in cardiovascular research. Dr. Poorvin is a member of several professional organizations, including the Licensing Executive Society.

Dr. Kamen joined Oxford as an Executive-in-Residence in November 2002. Prior to that, he was president of Abbott Bioresearch Center, Abbott's immunology/oncology drug discovery and biologics production unit in Worcester, Mass. He served on Abbott Pharmaceutical's Executive Management Committee. Dr. Kamen joined Abbott subsequent to its acquisition of BASF's pharmaceutical business in 2001 after serving as BASF Bioresearch Corporation's president for ten years. Dr. Kamen retired in May 2002, but continues to serve Abbott as senior consultant. He also serves on the scientific advisory boards of privately held biotechnology firms and advises other venture capital companies.From 1982-1986, Dr. Kamen was with the biotechnology company Genetics Institute, Inc., where he played a leadership role in building the Cambridge, Mass. firm. While at Genetics Institute, he served as Director of Research, Vice President for Research and Senior Vice President, Scientific Affairs. He was responsible for discovery/pre-clinical research activities and established the clinical development department. Wyeth acquired Genetics Institute in 1991.Dr. Kamen graduated from Amherst College in 1965 with an A.B. (summa cum laude) in biophysics and from Harvard University in 1970 with a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. After post-doctoral fellowships at the University of Zurich and at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories, London, Dr. Kamen accepted a tenured appointment as senior staff scientist at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories and served as head of its Transcription Laboratory until 1982. He is known for his fundamental academic contributions to the fields of gene expression, RNA stability, molecular virology, molecular oncology and human cytokines.

Dr. Steven Targum serves as Chief Medical Officer at BCI where he works with the scientific team to translate the BCI neurogenesis platform into clinical drug development strategies. Presently, Dr. Targum is a consultant in psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston) and lecturer at the Harvard Medical School. Previously, Dr. Targum was Professor of Psychiatry and Vice-Chair of the Department of Mental Health Sciences at Hahnemann University School of Medicine (Philadelphia) from 1989-1995. Dr. Targum founded PharmaStar in 2001, a training and education company focused on CNS drug development, which was sold in October 2004. He also developed and operated a multi-site clinical trials program which he sold in 1996. Dr. Targum consults widely to the pharmaceutical industry regarding the design and implementation of clinical trials for new psychotropic drugs and the progression of drug development from approval to launch. He has published over 100 scientific articles in the areas of psychopharmacology, psychobiology, and clinical trials methodology, lectured extensively, and conducted over 200 clinical drug trials for numerous pharmaceutical sponsors.
