As an extension of the bio-informatics mining of genomics and proteomics content, Dr Chichester's working in the private sector, has proceeded to generate important results in the area of biological data representation (thesauri), information retrieval, and the design of new knowledge engineering processes. Working as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology at Stanford University, Dr. Chichester acquired an extensive understanding of the processes of data mining from sequence databases. Subsequently, she moved to Switzerland to join Geneva Bioinformatics (GeneBio), SA as a Senior Scientist. She specialized in the design and performance evaluation of biological information retrieval systems and the user interaction with those systems. Presently, she continues to works closely with the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and the Swiss-Prot database group. Dr. Chichester has conducted extensive molecular and cell biological bench work studying the mechanism of action of the cytochrome P-450 enzyme system. She has focused on the mechanisms of cytotoxicity caused by environmental contaminants using both molecular biological and protein biochemical techniques.
