Pepco engineer Kelly Sullivan knows all about hard work and discipline. As one of the first women to graduate from the Virginia Military Institute (class of 2001), she endured grueling physical conditioning requirements and plowed through an equally difficult academic agenda. All of this was great training for her current post at Pepco. Sullivan, 27, is managing the installation of two 230-kilovolt underground transmission lines that will deliver more reliable electric power to downtown Washington . The $70 million project is on schedule to be complete by summer 2007. Sullivan is being recognized for her skill and her ability to command respect in a world often dominated by men. The Washington Post recently featured her in a Business cover story. The Georgia native who grew up on a Black Angus cattle ranch admits she would rather be out in the field than in an office. Her daily duties run the gamut from climbing into manholes to negotiating county permits.
