Pharmacyclics, Inc. was founded in 1991 based on the unique scientific collaboration between the company's co-founders, Jonathan L. Sessler, Ph.D. and company President and Chief Executive Officer, Richard A. Miller, M.D. Jonathan Sessler, who was then a graduate student in chemistry at Stanford University, was treated for cancer by Dr. Miller at Stanford University Medical Center in the early 1980s. Based on scientific discussions between the two researchers about novel therapies for cancer over the next several years, Dr. Sessler and his colleagues developed the "texaphyrin" molecules, so named because they were discovered at the University of Texas, where Dr. Sessler was a faculty member in the chemistry department. This research on potential medical use of texaphyrins was first described in a landmark publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal in 1996. With the vision of building a company to lead the development of innovative drugs that improve therapy for cancer and other serious diseases, Dr. Miller and Dr. Sessler formed Pharmacyclics, licensing the texaphyrin technology from the University of Texas. The company owns the worldwide marketing rights to all of its proprietary products. Pharmacyclics employs approximately 90 people, most of whom are dedicated to research, development, manufacturing, quality assurance and quality control, regulatory affairs, or preclinical and clinical testing...
