PPL's Martins Creek Environmental Preserve offers a variety of outdoor activities ranging from nature study and education to hiking, boating and fishing. Hiking. The Tekening Hiking Trails consist of a five-mile network of four trails along the Delaware River between the Martins Creek power plant and the village of Riverton. Click here for a map of the trails and more information. Nature Observation and Photography. The varied habitats of the Martins Creek Environmental Preserve offer opportunities throughout the changing seasons to explore, observe and photograph both plants and animals. Birding. The variety of habitats provides exciting birding opportunities throughout the year. More than 20 species of shorebirds have been found, including the first Northampton County sightings of the American Avocet, the Hudsonian Godwit and the Red Knot. The wetlands below the fly ash pond provide habitat for waterfowl and raptors, including several species of owls and hawks. The fields along the river are the site of the northernmost nesting record of the blue grosbeak. Picnicking. A picnic area, located near the boat access area, has tables, charcoal grills and toilets. There is no running water. The picnic facilities are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Boating and Fishing. Canoes and kayaks are welcome on the Delaware River. PPL maintains a boat access area just downstream of the Martins Creek power plant. Fishing enthusiasts are welcome, too. Click here for more information.
