R.T. Vanderbilt Company has four mining operations and two chemical manufacturing facilities, all wholly-owned subsidiaries. The Gouverneur district in northeastern New York State, a major talc and wollastonite producing area, is the location of R.T. Vanderbilt Company's largest mining and minerals processing plant, Gouverneur Talc Company, Inc. Gouverneur Talc Company also manufactures VANSIL wollastonite for the paint, ceramics and plastics industries. Dixie Clay Company mines and processes kaolin clay on 3,000 acres in Bath, South Carolina. Its reserves are estimated at 200 years. Kaolin, an hydrous aluminum silicate, is one of nature's purest minerals. It has been called a universal mineral filler because of its chemical stability. Commonly employed as a functional filler in rubber, paint, paper and plastics, it is also an important ingredient in ceramics, with uses in refractories, glassware, electrical insulators and fiberglass. Soft and hard grades of clay from different ore bodies or mines are blended in order to achieve the desired result for each customer's application. Standard Mineral Company, Inc., located on 1500 acres in Robbins, North Carolina, mines and processes pyrophyllite ore to produce PYRAX . PYRAX is used as a diluent and carrier for pesticides, and as an ingredient in paints, wall tiles and refractories.
