It is my privilege to serve as chief retention officer of nursing at Regions Hospital. I believe this is the best place to work! The excitement, energy and passion to care for our patients are impressive and inspiring. Regions nurses have unbelievable talent and compassion. Our nurses are unlike those anywhere else in the metro. We are a diverse and dynamic group, dedicated to delivering the best care and the best experience to our patients. Since graduating from nursing school in 1988, I have been working at Regions Hospital, in the health care career I have always wanted. Regions has provided me with numerous challenges and interesting career opportunities over the years. As the director of nursing practice and education, I have the pleasure of working collaboratively with physician and provider staff, nursing colleagues, ancillary support departments such as pharmacy and lab, as well as hospital administration, to ensure our patients receive the best care and best experience possible. Our patients represent numerous cultures and backgrounds which makes this work and career always interesting and rewarding. The compassion, goals, mission and vision shared by nursing and our other colleagues makes Regions a special place to work.

My passion is to provide exceptional anesthesia and surgical care for our patients. In my role as director of surgical services I feel especially fortunate to be working with staff who share this commitment and, in my opinion, are some of the best. Learning is a lifelong process, and there is no better environment to support continuous learning than in surgical services. We combine state-of-the-art technical expertise with tremendous care and compassion for each of our patients. I am honored to be a part of surgical services and Regions Hospital.

The focus on patient safety at Regions Hospital is near and dear to my heart. Both of my parents experienced medical errors out-of-state, so I realize the importance of providing a safe environment for our patients. Focusing on patient safety, we look at our systems and identify and remove factors that put our patients at risk. As we improve our systems we also enhance the nurses work environment. Nurses should feel they are providing safe care and their work environment supports this. As a director of nursing at Regions since March 2003, I find my role is that of facilitator. I provide the tools and supplies needed by our staff, facilitate improvement in processes and remove barriers. To accomplish this, I support nurses having a voice in the work that they do. It is our nurses at the bedside that are in the best position to determine what supports the safest environment for our patients. Shared Governance provides the vehicle for staff to have a voice in the nurses practice at the bedside. Through Shared Governance, nurses and other nursing department staff will create a safer environment for our patients. My education has prepared me for being an instrument of change in nursing. With a Master of Science in Nursing (focused on nursing administration and a related field in ethics) from the University of Minnesota and a Master in Health Care Administration from the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management, I am able to apply the tools that I have gained through my education to improving systems in patient care. Daily we have the opportunity to make a difference. Hospitalization is the most vulnerable time for our patients. We can make the patient experience here the safest and best that it can be during a most difficult time in their lives.

It was a passion for delivering exceptional trauma care and being part of a team that would lead Regions (then St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center) to become a verified Level I Trauma Center that first brought me to this organization. This was in 1990. I am very fortunate to be part of an organization that leads (rather than follows) in implementing best practices, clinical innovations and technologies. I am proud of the work our nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, infection control practitioners and other specialists have done to significantly reduce infection rates (e.g. ventilator associated pneumonia, central catheter related blood stream infections) and improve glucose control in critical care patients. Equally impressive are our electronic medical records, rapid response teams, RN/dietician teams providing collaborative enteral feeding and tube management, and progressive care models. Collectively these new processes make a difference in creating a safer system of care and improved experiences for patients and families. At Regions, there is a wealth of opportunity to learn via both formal education offerings and experiential opportunities regardless of position and specialty. Our connectivity to the larger HealthPartners family increases those opportunities. I am humbled and honored to work in an environment that is committed to providing best care and best experience to every patient, every day.

I received an associate degree in nursing from Rochester Community College and a bachelor's degree in nursing from Augsburg College. I also have Master of Nursing and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. I've had the benefit of working in a variety of settings both clinical and administrative, including ENT, plastics, the emergency department, heart cath lab, intensive care, gynecology, quality management, care management, utilization review, claims administration and most recently, patient safety. I've never entertained any other profession than nursing. My grandmother, although she never received any formal training, was the village nurse and midwife. It's evident I inherited my compassion, empathy and care-giving instincts from her. Regions Hospital is a wonderful place to work and we are committed to providing a safe environment for our patients, visitors and staff. We are heavily involved in a wide variety of initiatives designed to be timely, effective and efficient at providing the best care to our patients in an equitable patient-centered environment. Every staff person at Regions is dedicated to ensuring our patients have the best experience possible under our care, with patient safety being an essential component. Nurses plays a vital role in this effort and are central to developing a culture of patient safety.

I came to Regions Hospital because of an intense need and desire to be closer to my family in Canada. I was inspired to work here because it was obvious to me, from the very first interview, that the leadership and staff of behavioral health share my passion to fight to continuously improve the care that we provide the mentally ill. As director of nursing of behavior health services, I have the opportunity and pleasure to work collaboratively with experienced registered nurses and with staff from multiple other disciplines toward the ultimate goal of providing the Best Care and Best Experience for our patients. I am honored to work with gifted and compassionate staff in behavioral health as well as the network of other health professionals in other departments at Regions Hospital.

Dr. Robert Nelson is a biomedical scientist in the Surgical Research Laboratory. Before joining Regions Hospital, he spent 25 years in the Departments of Surgery and Dermatology at the University of Minnesota where he conducted research related to physiological and drug-related mechanisms that suppress functions of white blood cells. His research is focused on solving two problems related to the healing of burn wounds: itch that is not fully controlled by antihistamine drugs and hypertrophic scarring. His working hypothesis is that both of these problems can be traced to cells that migrate into the healing wound tissue where they are activated to release agents that stimulate nerve and skin cells. His research tools include a confocal microscope that produces a three-dimensional image of cells in biopsy tissue that have been stained with fluorescent dyes, and a flow cytometer that allows him to measure numbers of molecules on the surface of individual cells grown in tissue culture. Learning which cells contribute to itching and scarring will allow him to test novel therapies to eliminate these problems for the burn patient.
