Dr. Zappa has been involved in residency training since 1986 when the program was established. He first served as clinical and educational director before assuming the role of program director in 1991. The program has grown from two residents in 1986 to 15 residents today. Dr. Zappa takes great pride in the program's accomplishments and looks forward to improving the educational and clinical components of the program each year.

Dr. Christopher Mahr and Dr. Brian McCall are our sports medicine orthopods at Resurrection Medical Center. Dr. Mahr completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Illinois and then went on to do an arthroplasty and sports medicine fellowship in Australia. Dr. McCall completed his orthopedic residency at Georgetown University and has recently completed a sports medicine fellowship under the direction of world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews in Alabama. They both are assisting in developing the orthopedic component of the fellowship and serve as our orthopedic preceptors here at Resurrection.

Dr. Yong is the externship director of the combined programs and a clinical/surgical instructor at NCDVAMC. He is responsible for day-to-day clinical issues involving patient care, resident and extern supervision, patient scheduling, patient billing and didactic schedules for residents and externs, particularly as they impact clinic operations. He also supervises and teaches residents in the OR setting and assists with research clinical trials during scheduled clinic times.

Dr. Jacobsen was a Saint Joseph Hospital resident who completed his training and then joined the surgical faculty after graduation. He is in private practice in the Chicago area and has served as an associate since July 2005.

Dr. McCurry graduated from Chicago's Rush Medical College in 1984. He completed his Family Medicine Residency at Resurrection Medical Center as Chief Resident and received the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine's Resident Teaching Award. He has been on both part time and full time teaching faculty at Resurrection Medical Center since 1987. Dr. McCurry is board certified in family practice and has a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine. He has been active in sports medicine both covering local road races such as the Park Ridge Charity Classic and the Corporate Challenge as well as volunteering at Maine South High School. Dr. McCurry's passion is SCUBA medicine. He frequently does SCUBA medicine lectures and has published a book chapter on the topic. His other outside interests include photography, computers, piano, snow skiing, and camping with his family. His most recent adventure was zip-trekking in Whistler, B.C.

Dr. Chagares is the chief of Podiatry at NCDVAMC. He was the former director of the residency program at NCDVAMC before it merged with Saint Joseph Hospital's program. He is currently the on-site coordinator for the PGY-1 Saint Joseph Hospital/NCDVAMC PM&S-36 Residency Program. He is also responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Podiatry Section, Department of Surgery, at Saint Joseph Hospital. This includes Podiatry Attendings, Residents, Externs and Consultants. He oversees and supervises the podiatry residents in a variety of areas, including patient care, didactics and on-line learning. He also is responsible for ensuring the annual PGY-1 resident schedules address core and other competencies, completing resident assessments by measuring knowledge, skills and attitudes and directing PGY-1 residents to maintain complete electronic logs of all pertinent medical, surgical and didactic experiences. He also works closely with Dr. Zappa to address issues concerning PGY-1 residents. Dr. Chagares also serves as the liaison between Rosalind Franklin University/Scholl College of Podiatry Medicine and NCDVAMC and is the primary sub-investigator for the clinical research trials being held jointly between the two institutions.
