In 1926, Royal Cake Company began a journey that has made it a leader in the snack cake industry today. Owner, Mr. G. G. Welch, produced his own favorite treats, creme-filled oatmeal cookies and fig bars. By the 1950's, additional Royal products were being distributed in every state east of the Mississippi River. Originally located on Academy Street in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the expanding bakery moved to Cassell Street in 1964. In the early 1970's, Mr. G. G. stepped down as President and turned the operations over to his son, Mr. John Welch. While under John's leadership, Royal's sales expanded to the West Coast and various foreign countries. Remaining a privately held corporation, Royal now produces and distributes more than 25 different varieties of great tasting treats under a range of private and branded labels, including the Royal label and our own private label, Bakers Best. With its own fleet of trucks, Royal delivers soft-baked goodness to the continental United States, exporting to Canada and Mexico. Royal products are exported worldwide. Sales are generally made through brokers and to distributors, with some direct sales to major chain stores. Royal products are available in grocery, discount, dollar and convenience stores, as well as vending machines and office snack trays. The Royal Thrift Store across from the bakery, on the corner of Cassell Street and Starlight Drive, was established to offer an outlet for production overruns and short-coded product...
