Sanofi-Aventis sees the future - where disease is in the past. Formed by a 2004 merger and headquartered in Paris, France, Sanofi-Aventis (NYSE: SNY (ADR) Euronext Paris: SAN) is the third-largest pharmaceutical maker in the world. The company researches, develops, manufactures, and markets prescription drugs. Its products include Allegra, Aprovel, Eloxatin, Lovenox, Nasacort, Plavix, Taxotere, and Tritace, among others. It has over 100 compounds in development, about 40 of which are in Phase II or III clinical trials. The company has annual revenue of about A28.5 billion and employs about 100,000 people. In March 2006 the company acquired almost 25% of Zentiva NV for approximately A430 million. In 2005 the company sold its interests in Wacker-Chemie.

Chris Viehbacher, born March 26, 1960, holds German and Canadian nationalities. He is a graduate of the Queens University (Ontario - Canada) and a certified public accountant. After beginning his career at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, between 1988-2008 he acquired broad international experience in Europe, in the United States and in Canada with the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) company. In his last position, Chris Viehbacher was President, Pharmaceutical Operations North America, a member of the board and Co-Chairman of the Portfolio Management Board. Gilles Lhernould has a diploma in pharmacy and a master’s degree (DEA) in industrial pharmacy. He began his career as a manufacturing supervisor at Laboratoires Bruneau, and in 1983 joined one of Sanofi’s subsidiaries where he managed production and later the factory.
