Stepan Company, which was incorporated under the laws of the state of Delaware on February 19, 1959, and its subsidiaries (the Company) produce specialty and intermediate chemicals, which are sold to other manufacturers and then made into a variety of end products. The Company has three reportable segments: surfactants, polymers and specialty products. Surfactants refer to chemical agents that affect the interaction between two surfaces; they can provide actions such as detergency (i.e., the ability of water to remove soil from another surface), wetting and foaming, dispersing, emulsification (aiding two dissimilar liquids to mix), demulsification, viscosity modifications and biocidal disinfectants. Surfactants are the basic cleaning agent in detergents for washing clothes, dishes, carpets, fine fabrics, floors and walls. Surfactants are also used for the same purpose in shampoos and conditioners, fabric softeners, toothpastes, cosmetics and other personal care products. Commercial and industrial applications include emulsifiers for agricultural products, emulsion polymers such as floor polishes and latex foams and coatings, wetting and foaming agents for wallboard manufacturing, surfactants for enhanced oil recovery and biodiesel. In September 2008, the Company entered into a joint venture agreement with Nalco Company. Dr. Earl H. Wagener earned his B.S. (1964) and Ph. D. (1967) degrees in organic chemistry from Clemson University. Over the past 36 years, he has held leadership positions in eleven research and development groups at Dow Chemical and Stepan Company in both the U.S. and Europe. These groups have developed innovative products having cumulative sales of over $3 billion dollars, including: the first commercially feasible cathodic electrodeposition polymers, polymeric membranes for reverse osmosis, gas separation, fuel cells, pervaporation and dialysis, urethane and epoxy polymers for the aerospace, electronic, automotive, construction, and coatings industries, specialty latexes for coating, construction, medical, and agricultural industries, and specialty products such as surfactants for use in home care, personal care, industrial and institutional, agricultural, polymer processing, and food products, ion exchange resins, antibacterials, methocel, specialty thermosets, and mining chemicals. Dr. Wagener joined Tetramer Technologies L.L.C., in September, 2001 as Chief Executive Officer. He is also the principal investigator for three Tetramer Technologies NSF Phase I Small Business Innovation Awards.
