Stillwater mines deep. Founded in 1986 and headquartered in Billings, MT, Stillwater Mining Company (NYSE: SWC) explores for, develops, extracts, processes, and refines platinum and related minerals. The company mines for platinum group metals (PGMs) at its mine in Montana for use in catalytic converters, industrial applications, and in jewelry. It produces about 430,000 ounces of palladium and 135,000 ounces of platinum per year. It has proven and probable reserves of about 42 million tons of ore. It is the only major producer of palladium in the Western Hemisphere. The company had 2005 revenue of about $507.5 million and about 1,600 full-time employees. In January 2006, it amended its credit facility to reduce the effective interest rate spread by 100 basis points on the original $140 million six-year Term Loan entered into on August 3, 2004. At the company's current debt level, this will save approximately $1 million per year in interest expense.
