Strauss History The company was founded in 1919 in Newark, New Jersey by Herman Schlenger and Harry Roth. R & S Auto, as it was then known, opened numerous outlets in northern NJ over the next three decades. In 1954 R & S Auto opened its first superstore at a highway location. A forerunner of today's super stores, this was the first store to include a service garage and the amenity of customer parking. In 1983 R & S Auto merged with Strauss stores from New York City creating R&S/Strauss the largest auto parts retailer in the northeast, comprising over 70 stores. Strauss was founded on May 10, 1929 by Isaac. M. Strauss who started with five stores and a warehouse in Brooklyn, NY. In 1987 the company expanded beyond New York and New Jersey by acquiring the Penn-Jersey auto parts chain adding stores in Philadelphia and Wilmington Delaware. At this point Strauss began concentrating on growing the service and repair segment of the business and was committed to opening super stores with complete service facilities. In 1995 management began the process of officially changing the name to Strauss Discount Auto. Strauss Discount Auto stores can be found throughout New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Bethlehem Pennsylvania. All Strauss stores are now linked by high-speed intranet and share a database that includes as much in depth information on customers cars as possible including the vehicle identification number which can provide the vehicle's repair history...
