We are an international biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of proprietary drugs based on prostones, a class of compounds derived from functional fatty acids that occur naturally in the human body. In January 2006, we received marketing approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, for our first product, Amitiza ® (lubiprostone), for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation, or CIC, in adults. In April 2008, the FDA approved Amitiza for its second indication for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, or IBS-C, in adult women. We are currently developing Amitiza for the treatment of opioid-induced bowel dysfunction, or OBD. In the United States and Canada, Amitiza is being marketed and developed under a collaboration and license agreement with Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, or Takeda, for gastrointestinal indications. Under the agreement with Takeda, we are primarily responsible for the research and development of Amitiza, while Takeda is primarily responsible for the commercialization and marketing activities. Additionally, Takeda funds the majority of our research and development activities in the United States and part of the co-promotion activities of our own sales force, per the terms of the agreement.
