David C. Stump joined the Company in November 1999 as Senior Vice President, Drug Development. In December 2003, he was promoted to Executive Vice President. Dr. Stump came to HGS from Genentech, Inc., where he was Vice President, Clinical Research, since 1995. In 1996 he was named a Genentech Fellow, only the second in Genentech’s history. Dr. Stump also served as a member of the Genentech Product Development Committee and chaired the Clinical Review Committee. While he was closely involved with overall clinical development efforts during his last five years at Genentech, Dr. Stump was most widely recognized for a decade of leadership of the company’s thrombolytic therapy drug development program, which accomplished multiple successful clinical trials and drug approvals for patients with acute myocardial infarction and acute ischemic stroke. Dr. Stump joined Genentech in 1989 from the University of Vermont where he was Associate Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry. He holds an A.B. from Earlham College and an M.D. from Indiana University. Dr. Stump received residency and fellowship training in internal medicine, hematology and oncology at the University of Iowa, where he also received advanced research training in biochemistry. In addition, he completed specialized training in hemostasis research as a visiting investigator at the University of Leuven, Belgium. Dr. Stump is certified by the American Board of Medicine, including its Medical Oncology and Hematology Subspecialty Boards. He holds membership in a variety of professional organizations and is an elected Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology of the American Heart Association. Dr. Stump is a member of the Board of Trustees of Adventist HealthCare and the Board of Directors of Sunesis Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Dr. Fodor is one of the founders of Perlegen and has served as chairman of Perlegen's Board of Directors since the company's inception. He is also Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Affymetrix, Inc. Dr. Fodor previously held positions at the Affymax Research Institute from 1989 to 1992, where he spearheaded the effort to develop high-density arrays of biological compounds. Dr. Fodor and colleagues were the first to develop and describe microarray technologies and combinatorial chemistry synthesis, today known as GeneChip brand technology, for which they received the AAAS 1992 Newcomb Cleveland Award. In 2002, Dr. Fodor earned the prestigious Takeda Foundation Award for his accomplishments in science, as well as The Economist Innovation Award for Nanotechnology and the Oxford Bioscience Award. Dr. Fodor also serves on the Board of Directors of Sunesis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute of Washington. He received his B.S. in biology and M.S. in biochemistry from Washington State University and his Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton University. Dr. Fodor was a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at The University of California, Berkeley.

Lee Douglas was a co-founder of COR Therapeutics, Inc. During his 10 years at COR, he served in a number of senior management positions, including COR's original CEO. Since 1998, Mr. Douglas has been an independent consultant to biotechnology companies, including Cytokinetics, Inc and Sunesis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He was a member of the founding teams of FivePrime and Portola Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he continues to serve as an advisor. Mr. Douglas also serves as a member of the board of Affymax, Inc. and Aerovance, Inc. Prior to co-founding COR, he was a general partner in the venture group at Robertson, Stephens & Co, and was involved in the start-up of several companies including Protein Design Labs, Inc. Mr. Douglas is also a Visiting Scholar in the Molecular and Cell Biology Department at University of California at Berkeley, where he conducts independent research on cytoskeletal motor proteins as drug targets in the protozoal parasites Trypanosoma brucei and Leishmania. He received his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, MCRP from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and B.A. from University of North Carolina at Charlotte. If his research project makes sufficient progress, he hopes to enter a formal Ph.D. program before he gets too old to complete it.
Dr. Rothenberg is Ingram Professor of Cancer Research at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville, Tennessee. He is also a medical oncologist with appointments at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. Rothenberg is the Director of the Phase I Drug Development Program at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and he serves on a number of committees including the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Gastrointestinal Cancer SPORE Executive Committee and Lung Cancer SPORE Steering Committee, the Clinical Cancer Research Committee for the American Association for Cancer Research, and the Medical Oncology Committee for the American College of Surgeons. He also serves on the editorial boards of seven peer-reviewed journals and has authored over 100 scientific and clinical publications.

Stephen K. Carter, M.D., a Director of the Company since 2003, is the former Senior Vice President, Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, of Sugen, Inc. (ownership of Sugen has since passed to Pfizer, Inc. as part of its acquisition of Pharmacia in April 2003). Dr. Carter previously was the Senior Vice President, Research and Development of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., now independently owned. Matthew Fust has served as a member of our board of directors since 2005. Mr. Fust is the Chief Financial Officer of Jazz Pharmaceuticals, a pharmaceutical company. From May 2002 to May 2003, Mr. Fust was Chief Financial Officer at Perlegen Sciences, Inc., a biotechnology company. Russell is a Managing Director of Prospect Venture Partners. Russell co-founded Prospect Venture Partners II and III, as dedicated life science funds with over $1 billion in capital under management. Prior to establishing Prospect Venture Partners II and III, Russell was a member of the Health Care Technology Group at Mayfield. He joined Mayfield in 1992, served as a Venture Partner from 1993 to 1994 and as a General Partner from 1995-2000. Russell played a key role in Mayfield's investment activities in the biotechnology and medical device sectors. As an Associate, he participated actively in the incubation of Millennium Pharmaceuticals and as a General Partner he was responsible for the incubation of Intuitive Surgical Devices both of which are now publicly traded. His work, published in a variety of respected journals, focused on important aspects of hepatitis B viral replication. His descriptions of the reverse transcription and packaging functions of polymerase gene products merited publication in Nature. Russell serves or has served on the Board of Directors of Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG), Sunesis (NASDAQ: SNSS), Valentis (NASDAQ: VLTS), Opus Medical (NASDAQ: ARTC), Orquest (NASDAQ: JNJ), Visiogen, AVEO Pharmaceuticals, Hansen Medical, Portola Pharmaceuticals, Baxano, Dfine and several other privately-held companies. Russell serves as the Vice Chairman of the BOD of Interplast and on the Genetics Advisory Council of the Harvard Medical School-Partners Healthcare Center for Genetics and Genomics. Russell holds an M.D. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, San Francisco and a B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Chicago.
