Darren is a Software Engineer for EnerNex Corporation, where he provides information security, solution development, and project management expertise. He has been consulting and implementing solutions for clients for more than 7 years, with his primary focus being enterprise-level communications and information processing. Darren has experience in team development, organization, and leadership, as well as the development and implementation of policies and procedures. He has worked with a wide range of clientele, from the U.S. Department of Energy to privately-owned small businesses, mid-sized corporations, and utilities such as the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and Southern California Edison (SCE). Darren is serving as the point-of-contact and project manager for EnerNex in support of TVA's substation-to-enterprise data integration and information security efforts. He is responsible for coordinating all EnerNex resources in support of TVA as well as ensuring that task deliverables are on time, on target, and within budget. Darren is one of the system architects for development of the TVA PowerWAN - a new wide area IP-based network providing secure enterprise level access to operational and non-operational substation data - and has been heavily involved in the integration of the Bradley County 500kV Substation - a fully automated, next generation environment implementing IEC 61850 capable devices supplied by multiple vendors. His is the primary author of the overall security policy for the PowerWAN, putting TVA in position to meet the NERC CIP standards, as well as many other reference documents and specifications for both the PowerWAN and Bradley Substation projects. Darren has also taken the lead in working with TVA personnel to perform a Systems Assessment of the Transmission Telecommunications Infrastructure using the Intelligrid requirements capture methodology, and is assisting with the IEC TC57 WG19 efforts of harmonizing the 61850 and CIM standards. He is also serving as the information security expert for EnerNex in support of SCE's Advanced Metering Initiative (AMI). He has developed the information security framework that will be used to manage risk, write policy, and produce specifications for the AMI. Darren has also produced multiple reference documents for SCE in regard to information security, including a roadmap for the development of the framework, security domain identification, threat and vulnerability analysis, policy recommendations, and a position statement regarding the application of the NERC CIP standards. In addition to TVA and SCE, Darren has been involved in multiple other communication, security, and software engineering consulting projects with a variety of utilities and vendors. Prior to joining EnerNex Corporation, Darren was the Lead Developer for Trident Resource Corporation, where he served as the chief architect and analyst for the Additional Protocol Reporting System (ARPS) developed for the U.S. Department of Energy in cooperation with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This system will support DOE activities in reporting certain nuclear related activities to the International Atomic Energy Agency in compliance with the Protocol Additional to the Agreement between the United States and the International Atomic Energy Agency for the Application of Safeguards in the United States of America. The APRS will support DOE reporting processes, including deciding what to declare, preparation, review, approval, tracking, and submitting the declaration data to the U.S. government system. The APRS is intended to be the system of record for DOE declarations as well as maintaining the data necessary to address issues related to clarification of the declarations, archival information, and complementary access. Darren was responsible for the entire interface design and the bulk of the code for the Declaration Decision Assistant application the first desktop application using Microsoft's .NET platform to...
