Harold E. "Barry" Selick, Ph.D. joined Threshold as Chief Executive Officer in June 2002. Between June 2002 and July 2007, Dr. Selick was a Venture Partner of Sofinnova Ventures, Inc., a venture capital firm. From January 1999 to April 2002, he was Chief Executive Officer of Camitro Corporation, a biotechnology company. From 1992 to 1999, he was at Affymax Research Institute, the drug discovery technology development center for Glaxo Wellcome plc, most recently as Vice President of Research. Prior to working at Affymax he held scientific positions at Protein Design Labs, Inc. and Anergen, Inc.. As a staff scientist at Protein Design Labs, he co-invented the technology underlying the creation of fully humanized antibody therapeutics and applied that to PDL's first product, Zenapax, which was developed and commercialized by Roche for treating kidney transplant rejection. Dr. Selick received his B.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and was a Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Fund Fellow and an American Cancer Society Senior Fellow at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Curd became the President and CMO in October 2007. Mark joined us as Vice President of Discovery in August 2002. From 1999 to 2002, he provided medicinal chemistry consultation to several biotechnology companies including Threshold. From 1988 to 1999, he was the Director of Bioorganic Chemistry at Gilead Sciences, Inc. where he was the first scientist hired and established that company’s research program in nucleic acid targeting. He built and led an interdisciplinary team of 20 scientists and was a key player in establishing a well funded scientific collaboration between Gilead and Glaxo. During his time at Gilead, he established himself as an intellectual leader in the field of nucleic acids targeting with over 50 publications and 30 patents in the area and numerous invited presentations at international meetings. Prior to joining Gilead Sciences, Dr. Matteucci was a scientist at Genentech, Inc. There, he modernized the oligonucleotide synthesis efforts and invented the H phosphonate method of DNA synthesis. He received his B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Ph.D. from the University of Colorado where he co-invented the DNA synthesis technology which is the foundation of the modern “gene machine”.

Fred Volinsky began his career as an Emergency Physician where he spent 8 years on the attending staff of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He was one of the original faculty members of the Harvard Residency in Emergency Medicine and the Harvard Department of Emergency Medicine at MGH. While at Harvard, Volinsky developed a medical device that he licensed to Moser Medical. Dr. Volinsky continued to follow his entrepreneurial interests and co-founded Exhale Pharmaceuticals, now known as CoTherix (CTRX-Nasdaq). He left MGH in 2000 to become Managing Director of RCT BioVentures, an early stage life science fund where he was an investor in a variety of biotechnology companies including Cylene Pharmaceuticals, Catalyst BioSciences, Kerberos Proximal Solutions, Imagine Pharmaceuticals, and Arizeke Pharmaceuticals. He has held Directorships at Myometrix, Cylene Pharmaceuticals, Imagine Pharmaceuticals, Kerberos Proximal Solutions, and Catalyst Biosciences. Dr. Hurwitz is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University Medical Center and a medical oncologist at the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Hurwitz received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and completed an Internal Medicine residency at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, and an Oncology fellowship at Johns Hopkins Oncology Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He is associate professor of medicine and the clinical director of the Phase 1 program and co-leader of the GI Oncology program at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He is an author of over 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers published in leading journals.

Dr. Borch is the Head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology and is also Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. He trained first at Columbia for his Ph.D., then at Harvard for as a postdoctoral fellow and then at University of Minnesota for his M.D. He is a leader in the medicinal chemistry of prodrugs and their application to targeting cancer. His early publications on hypoxia activated prodrugs have served as a foundation for the field. He has published over 100 papers.

Dr. Everett is an Adjunct Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at UCSF, Head of the Drug Discovery and Translational Research Group at the University of Dundee, and Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of SPEAR Therapeutics, Inc. He has 17 years experience in the discovery and development of prodrugs for targeted cancer therapy, successfully bridging the academic and commercial interface in the field. In 1992 Dr Everett joined the Gray Laboratory a world-renowned center for radiation chemistry and biology applied to oncology which recently evolved into the Gray Institute for Radiation Oncology and Biology affiliated to the University of Oxford (UK) where he specialized in free radical mechanisms of oxidative stress in cancer and hypoxia-activated prodrug (HAP) design. In 2005 he became a principal investigator on a Cancer Research UK-funded program of research at the University of Dundee to develop innovative prodrug strategies for the treatment of cancer. Dr Everett Co-Founded SPEAR Therapeutics in 2003 and raised a significant venture capital investment in late 2005 to develop novel prodrug therapies into the clinic. In 2009 he joined the Faculty at UCSF and is a consultant on the Threshold Pharmaceutical HAP program. Dr. Everett received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Ulster (UK) and the Hahn-Meitner Institut in Berlin (Germany) in 1991, and a Masters in Business Administration with distinction in 1997. Dr. Everett is an author of over 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers published in leading journals and 6 patents.
