Threshold Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Harold E. "Barry" Selick, Ph.D. joined Threshold as Chief Executive Officer in June 2002. Between June 2002 and July 2007, Dr. Selick was a Venture Partner of Sofinnova Ventures, Inc., a venture capital firm. From January 1999 to April 2002, he was Chief Executive Officer of Camitro Corporation, a biotechnology company. From 1992 to 1999, he was at Affymax Research Institute, the drug discovery technology development center for Glaxo Wellcome plc, most recently as Vice President of Research. Prior to working at Affymax he held scientific positions at Protein Design Labs, Inc. and Anergen, Inc.. As a staff scientist at Protein Design Labs, he co-invented the technology underlying the creation of fully humanized antibody therapeutics and applied that to PDL's first product, Zenapax, which was developed and commercialized by Roche for treating kidney transplant rejection. Dr. Selick received his B.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and was a Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Fund Fellow and an American Cancer Society Senior Fellow at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Curd became the President and CMO in October 2007. Dr. Curd joins Threshold as a member of the management team and will lead the clinical development of the Company’s product development candidates and help to identify additional opportunities for Threshold. Dr. Curd joins Threshold from Novacea, Inc. where he was the president and chief medical officer since 2001. From May 2001 to December 2001, Dr. Curd served as senior vice president of Development and interim president for Vaccines at Maxygen, Inc. From June 1999 to May 2001, Dr. Curd served as executive vice president at VaxGen, Inc. From December 1991 to June 1999, Dr. Curd served in various positions, including vice president of Clinical Development, at Genentech, Inc. While at Genentech, he directed the clinical development of Herceptin®, Rituxan®, Xolair®, and Raptiva®. From 1978 to 1991, Dr. Curd served in various positions, including president of the Medical Staff at Scripps Clinical and Research Foundation, La Jolla, California. Dr. Curd holds a B.S. in chemistry from Princeton University and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School.

Mark joined us as Vice President of Discovery in August 2002. From 1999 to 2002, he provided medicinal chemistry consultation to several biotechnology companies including Threshold. From 1988 to 1999, he was the Director of Bioorganic Chemistry at Gilead Sciences, Inc. where he was the first scientist hired and established that company’s research program in nucleic acid targeting. He built and led an interdisciplinary team of 20 scientists and was a key player in establishing a well funded scientific collaboration between Gilead and Glaxo. During his time at Gilead, he established himself as an intellectual leader in the field of nucleic acids targeting with over 50 publications and 30 patents in the area and numerous invited presentations at international meetings. Prior to joining Gilead Sciences, Dr. Matteucci was a scientist at Genentech, Inc. There, he modernized the oligonucleotide synthesis efforts and invented the H phosphonate method of DNA synthesis. He received his B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Ph.D. from the University of Colorado where he co-invented the DNA synthesis technology which is the foundation of the modern “gene machine”.

Cathleen P. Davis, the Company?s Vice President, Finance and Controller, has served as the Company?s principal financial and accounting officer since October 2006. Ms. Davis, joined the Company as Controller in July 2005. Prior to joining the Company, Ms. Davis served as Controller of Theravance Inc. from 2002 to 2005, and of ALZA Corporation from 1999 to 2002. Ms. Davis has been a Certified Public Accountant in California since 1981, and has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California State University, Hayward.

Kevin Kaster, J.D., joined Threshold in October 2002 as Vice President, Intellectual Property. From August 1998, to October 2002, he served as the Vice President, Intellectual Property, to Kosan Biosciences. Prior to that he held positions managing patent portfolios at Geron (telomerase and human embryonic stem cells), Affymax (combinatorial chemistries), and Cetus (PCR). Kevin has a J.D. from Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis, and a B.S. in Chemistry and Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University.

Stewart Kroll has served as the Company’s Vice President, Biostatistics and Clinical Operations since March 2007. Mr. Kroll joined the Company as Director, Biostatistics in January 2005. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Kroll served as Sr. Director of Biostatistics at Corixa Corporation from 2000 to 2005, and served in positions of increasing responsibility, most recently as Director of Biostatistics at Coulter Pharmaceuticals from 1997 to 2000. Mr. Kroll received a B.A. and M.A. in Mathematical Statistics from University of California Berkeley.

Joel Fernandes, the Company’s Senior Director, Finance and Controller, has served as the Company’s principal financial and accounting officer since November 2007. Mr. Fernandes, joined the Company as Assistant Controller in April 2006. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Fernandes served as Associate Director of Finance at Theravance Inc. from 2005 to 2006, Senior Manager of Corporate Finance at KLA-Tencor from 2002 to 2005 and Assistant Controller of ALZA Corporation from 1999 to 2002. Mr. Fernandes has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1996, and has a Masters in Accountancy from Manchester College, Indiana.

Fred Volinsky began his career as an Emergency Physician where he spent 8 years on the attending staff of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He was one of the original faculty members of the Harvard Residency in Emergency Medicine and the Harvard Department of Emergency Medicine at MGH. While at Harvard, Volinsky developed a medical device that he licensed to Moser Medical. Dr. Volinsky continued to follow his entrepreneurial interests and co-founded Exhale Pharmaceuticals, now known as CoTherix (CTRX-Nasdaq). He left MGH in 2000 to become Managing Director of RCT BioVentures, an early stage life science fund where he was an investor in a variety of biotechnology companies including Cylene Pharmaceuticals, Catalyst BioSciences, Kerberos Proximal Solutions, Imagine Pharmaceuticals, and Arizeke Pharmaceuticals. He has held Directorships at Myometrix, Cylene Pharmaceuticals, Imagine Pharmaceuticals, Kerberos Proximal Solutions, and Catalyst Biosciences. Dr. Volinsky is a Co-Chairman of the Stanford BioBootcamp and the founder and Co-Chairman of the UCSD BioBootcamp. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the UCSD Cancer Center, the Scientific Advisory Board to the Bailard Life Science Fund, and the Clinical Advisory Board of Catalyst Biosciences. Volinsky is also a consultant to Threshold Pharmaceuticals and Diobex. Dr. Volinsky earned his medical degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Madigan Army Medical center and was elected as a Fellow to the American College of Emergency Physicians. Volinsky spent 6 years as a military physician and was an attending physician at Walter Reed Army Center.

Prior to cofounding Three Arch Partners, Wilf was a general partner at Schroder Ventures. Wilf began his medical career in private practice. He was subsequently recruited by Chec Medical, a venture capital backed ambulatory care startup in Seattle. Later, in 1989, following business school, he began venture investing with Phoenix Partners. He has since been an active early stage investor in numerous successful biotechnology, healthcare service, and medical device companies. He has served on the boards of many private and public healthcare companies. Wilf ranked first in his class at the University of British Columbia where he earned a BS in Biology. He received his MD from the University of British Columbia School of Medicine. He has an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Dr. Hurwitz is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University Medical Center and a medical oncologist at the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Hurwitz received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and completed an Internal Medicine residency at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, and an Oncology fellowship at Johns Hopkins Oncology Center in Baltimore, Maryland. His clinical expertise is in the areas of Phase 1 clinical trials involving new anti cancer drugs, drug combinations, and combinations of new drugs with radiation and cancers of the gastrointestinal system. His particular interest is in biomarkers related to anti-angiogenesis therapy. He was the lead author on the IFL/bevacizumab study in colorectal cancer. He is associate professor of medicine and the clinical director of the Phase 1 program and co-leader of the GI Oncology program at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He is an author of over 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers published in leading journals.

Dr. Borch is the Head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology and is also Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. He trained first at Columbia for his Ph.D., then at Harvard for as a postdoctoral fellow and then at University of Minnesota for his M.D. He is a leader in the medicinal chemistry of prodrugs and their application to targeting cancer. His early publications on hypoxia activated prodrugs have served as a foundation for the field. He has published over 100 papers.

Dr. Everett is an Adjunct Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at UCSF, Head of the Drug Discovery and Translational Research Group at the University of Dundee, and Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of SPEAR Therapeutics, Inc. He has 17 years experience in the discovery and development of prodrugs for targeted cancer therapy, successfully bridging the academic and commercial interface in the field. In 1992 Dr Everett joined the Gray Laboratory a world-renowned center for radiation chemistry and biology applied to oncology which recently evolved into the Gray Institute for Radiation Oncology and Biology affiliated to the University of Oxford (UK) where he specialized in free radical mechanisms of oxidative stress in cancer and hypoxia-activated prodrug (HAP) design. In 2005 he became a principal investigator on a Cancer Research UK-funded program of research at the University of Dundee to develop innovative prodrug strategies for the treatment of cancer. Dr Everett Co-Founded SPEAR Therapeutics in 2003 and raised a significant venture capital investment in late 2005 to develop novel prodrug therapies into the clinic. In 2009 he joined the Faculty at UCSF and is a consultant on the Threshold Pharmaceutical HAP program. Dr. Everett received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Ulster (UK) and the Hahn-Meitner Institut in Berlin (Germany) in 1991, and a Masters in Business Administration with distinction in 1997. Dr. Everett is an author of over 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers published in leading journals and 6 patents.
