Harrison J. Rider III is the president of Union Memorial Hospital and a member of the MedStar Health Leadership Team. MedStar Health is a community-based network of eight of the Baltimore/Washington area's finest non-profit hospitals and other healthcare services. Union Memorial Hospital, one of MedStar's eight major hospitals, was founded in 1854, has 287 beds and 2,300 employees. In fiscal year 2003, the hospital had over 18,500 admissions, 46,000 emergency room visits, and 850 open-heart cases. Rider first joined the Good Samaritan Health System in Baltimore in 1980, as controller. In 1994, as the chief financial officer, he played a key role in merging Good Samaritan with Helix Health, at the time a two-hospital health system that served the Baltimore area. Rider then became the health system's chief financial officer, and in 1996, he assumed the role as executive vice president and chief operating officer. In his current position as president of Union Memorial Hospital, Rider has ensured the hospital's fiscal viability by turning a $9.9 million loss for fiscal year 1999 into five straight years of profit with an operating margin of $12.4 million in fiscal year 2004. He has implemented a customer service program and other quality initiatives to improve patient, physician and employee satisfaction, which have resulted in more than a 30 percent increase in volumes. At the same time, satisfaction levels of physicians have increased to the 99th percentile. The hospital was recognized in fiscal year 2004 by Solucient as one of the top 100 in the nation and as one of the top 100 cardiovascular programs in the nation. Additionally, the orthopedic program was recognized by US News & World Report as one of the top 50 programs in the country. Rider is a certified public accountant and a fellow in the Healthcare Financial Management Association. He is a past member of the Maryland Hospital Association's Financial Policy Group. Rider received his bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Nebraska in 1972 and his master's in business administration with a concentration in health care from Loyola College in Baltimore in 1978.
