Dow Jones Description

The clan pulled together. Joe, then an Ohio State University freshman, returned home, determined to keep Velvet operating. Uncle Ed would come down from the Bucyrus ice operation several days a week to help fill the void, leaving his wife Hanna to run the ice company. His sister Maureen, at the time a third-year business major and currently a Velvet Account Manager, joined him, running the office alongside her mother Josephine. Mike was just a high school sophomore, but he continued to work after school, on weekends, and during the summer. Ed commuted between his post at the Bucyrus location and the Utica plant, teaching Joe how to run the company. Ed became President of Velvet, but the younger Dager siblings made a decision early on to dedicate their careers to the success of the family business. Even though they made it when young, Joe, Mike, and Maureen still feel it was the right decision. The Dager family's close relationship and perseverance brought new growth to the company. The business outgrew its plant behind the confectionery and, in 1960, Velvet Ice Cream moved from downtown Utica to a modern ice cream plant on the outskirts of town.
