Daniel J. Beers MD is an ophthalmic surgeon specializing in laser vision correction and cataract surgery. He has successfully performed over 10,000 LASIK, cataract and lens implant procedures. He is the Chief of Ophthalmology at El Camino Hospital and he teaches the latest techniques to the ophthalmologists in training at Stanford University. As an expert in his field, Dr. Beers has given presentations about advances in laser vision correction to the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He is currently a principal investigator with VISX and has been named "one of the top ophthalmologists in Silicon Valley" by San Jose magazine. Dr. Beers uses the newest generation of the VISX Wavefront and Intralase systems to provide patients with the safest and most accurate form of laser vision correction available. He has treated many physicians in the Bay Area and has had laser vision correction himself. Dr. Beers prides himself on careful personalized planning of each LASIK surgery to maximize patient safety and quality of vision. As an expert in cataract surgery, Dr. Beers utilizes a small incision to allow for rapid recovery for his patients. He implants a variety of the most advanced intraocular lenses including Crystalens, Restore, and Rezoom to allow patients to see well in the distance as well as up close. He is also one of the few surgeons in the area to complete advanced training to implant the Visian implantable collomer lens for patients that are not candidates for either laser vision correction or cataract surgery. Dr. Beers was raised in San Jose and graduated as the valedictorian at Cupertino High School. He attended UC San Diego where he graduated Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa while winning the NCAA Tennis Doubles Championship and becoming an NCAA All-American. Dr. Beers completed medical school at the prestigious UC San Francisco where he graduated in the top tier of his class. His advanced ophthalmology training was completed at Oregon Health Sciences where he participated in early FDA studies concerning the excimer laser and laser vision correction. Dr. Beers is an active member of the Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. A New York native, Dr. Sher received his BA. and MD. degrees with honors from Boston University at the age of 22. After a pediatric internship at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, he entered the U.S. Public Health Service as a commissioned officer in 1972 and served in the USPHS as a staff associate at the National Institute of Health. He spent the next three at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, performing tumor immunology and immunotherapy research and authoring a number of papers in that field. At the NIH, he became interested in ocular immunology and decided to train in ophthalmology. He then completed ophthalmology residency at the University of Minnesota followed by additional corneal and external disease training at Moorfield's Eye Hospital in London, UK. Returning to Minneapolis in 1979, he went into private practice. He is currently a partner in Eye Care Associates, a group of 8 ophthalmologists and optometrists with several offices in Minneapolis. Dr. Sher is an attending surgeon at the Phillips Eye Institute where he was a founding member in 1984 and has served as Chief of Ophthalmology. Active in teaching other doctors and students, Dr. Sher has been on the adjunct faculty of the University of Minnesota Medical School since 1979 and currently holds the rank of Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology. Since 1988, Dr. Sher has devoted considerable time to studying and working in the field of refractive surgery. He holds several patents on related medical devices. He has authored or co-authored more than 75 scientific papers or book chapters, is a frequent lecturer, and is a reviewer for a number of scientific journals. In 1994, Dr. Sher was the first American to be awarded prestigious Troutman Award by the International Society for Refractive Surgery for his paper on the control of pain using diclofenac after PRK. He is the editor of a textbook entitled Surgery for Hyperopia and Presbyopia, published in 1997 by Williams and Wilkins. It was the first book devoted to this topic. A new textbook edited by Dr. Sher, Surgery for Hyperopia,was published by Slack Inc. in November 03. He authored a monograph on postoperative care after laser corneal surgery (PRK) and edited an Atlas of Refractive Surgery for the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Dr. Sher has been the principal investigator or co-investigator for a number ophthalmologic clinical trials as well as a consultant for a number of ophthalmic-related companies including VISX Inc. He has served as a member of the Preferred Practice Patterns Panel of the American Academy of Ophthalmology for Refractive Errors and Refractive Surgery. Additionally, he has served on the editorial board of EyeWorld and Clinical Signs in Ophthalmology. He has helped develop evaluation tools for the quantification of ocular injury to toxic gases such as ammonia and chlorine.
