Dow Jones Description
Westlake's story began in 1905 when W.I. Westlake and his wife purchased the part of the Bagby & Doyle Hardware Company, a hardware store in Huntsville, Missouri. Early pictures show the first Westlake store carrying horse collars, saddles, and wood burning stoves. Their son, F.K. Westlake, would expand Westlake until the name was known throughout the mid-Missouri region. The Westlake stores were the first hardware stores in the region to tear down the traditional long counters separating customers from the merchandise, allowing customers to browse and select their own items. In 1975, a third generation of Westlakes moved into the city by operating a store in Blue Springs, MO. The entry into a metro area marked an important point in Westlake's history. Since then, Westlake's growth has been dynamic in the last 30 years. When Westlake celebrated its 75th anniversary, there were 15 stores, located in Missouri and eastern Kansas. Today, there are over 85 Westlake stores in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico.
